Case study: All-IP Lift Line Conversion

Background

Urbancoms has worked in the block management vertical for over 10 years, managing communal areas such as analogue lines into lifts, CCTV, door entry alarms and access control units.

With the 2025 PSTN Switch Off looming, and the recent Stop Sell of legacy technology, they were looking for a reliable provider who could offer digital replacements for their WLR-based services.

The challenge

They were recently approached by a block management company who had their analogue lines ceased by their previous provider. The Stop Sell campaign by Openreach meant they were struggling to reinstate the analogue lines that ere connected to six lifts. With the health and safety of the residents in question, they needed to find an appropriate solution.

They had looked into GSM SIM cards but ruled out his option as, not only was it too expensive to upgrade the SIM diallers, but the GSM reception as non-existent for this building.

With the 2025 PSTN Switch Off looming, and the recent Stop Sell of legacy technology, they were looking for a reliable provider who could offer digital replacements for their WLR-based services.

The solution

Having worked with Giacom since the inception of Urbancoms, they contacted their account manager to find out how the team could assist in finding a new, All-IP solution that fit within their budget.

With the help of Giacom’s product experts, an inhouse engineer and Giacom’s IP-ready portfolio, a new solution was born.

Giacom’s Technical Consultant talked through all the intricacies of the new solution to ensure the partner understood what was involved in the installation.

They also delivered dedicated staff training for the new IP products and assisted on-site on the day of installation to ensure any last-minute issues were ironed out.

New orders were placed for SOGEA connections, layered with Single Line Voice replacement, V-IP Essentials, which connected to the existing copper lines, preserving the existing cabling and lift diallers. Upon testing, the new solution was able to transmit calls from the emergency lift button to the call centre or control room.

We’re happy to say everything went smoothly. Although we were faced with some obstacles from the lift companies, the joint expertise of Giacom and Urbancoms soon squashed any hesitation of the lift companies when technology won the day. We are proud to have been one of the first companies in the country to execute new IP technology to provide a workable, cost-effective resolution.
